Manitoba government budget supports restaurant security and tourism
The Manitoba government has announced a new budget that has received praise from Restaurants Canada and the Manitoba Restaurant & Foodservices Association (MRFA). The budget includes $10 million for a Business Security Rebate and $4.5 million to support tourism in the province. Additionally, the budget proposes a 9.2% increase in funding for the justice system and offers payroll tax relief and tax deferrals. The government is also looking to reduce trade barriers with other provinces and plans to provide support for industries affected by trade disputes with the United States. Kris Barnier, VP of Restaurants Canada, highlighted the restaurant industry's struggles with profitability and crime. He expressed gratitude for the new funding aimed at improving business security. A recent survey revealed that 72% of restaurant owners reported increased crime near their establishments. Many are investing more in security measures to address theft and vandalism. Shaun Jeffrey, CEO of MRFA, mentioned that Manitoba has lost over 100 independent restaurants since 2017. He stressed the importance of the new anti-crime measures and tax relief to help protect jobs and restaurant locations. Currently, approximately 2,650 foodservice businesses in Manitoba employ about 37,400 people, with many more jobs linked to this industry. In 2023, Manitoba's foodservice sector generated over $3.2 billion in revenue.
