Marcos Gonzales named Daily Southtown Player of the Year
Marcos Gonzales has been named the 2024-25 Daily Southtown Boys Basketball Player of the Year. The senior guard from Brother Rice made a significant impact on his team and the basketball program. He holds the record for the most wins as a player in Brother Rice history. Gonzales aimed to leave a legacy during his final season. He said, “Legends leave a legacy.” He wanted to be remembered as someone who helped take his team to the state championship. Under his leadership, Brother Rice achieved its best season ever, finishing as the runner-up in Class 3A. Throughout the season, Gonzales averaged 18.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. His performance in important moments was key to many victories. In the state championship game, he scored all 13 points for his team in the fourth quarter. Despite losing to DePaul Prep in double overtime, Gonzales’ efforts stood out. His teammates trusted him in high-pressure situations. Senior guard Jack Weigus praised Gonzales, saying he could take over a game whenever needed. Gonzales credits his growth to his coach, Conte Stamas, who he describes as a father figure. Gonzales has deep roots in basketball. His father, Michael, was a star player, and Marcos has admired him since childhood. “He’s always been a role model for me,” said Gonzales. In a few months, Gonzales will start his college basketball career at The Citadel, a Division I program. This has been a long-time dream for him. He said, “I never thought Division I basketball was an outside goal for me. Now that it’s happening, I’m really excited.”
