Maryland hires Ted Monachino as defensive coordinator
Maryland has named Ted Monachino as its new defensive coordinator. This announcement was made on Tuesday, as the team begins its spring practice. Monachino has an extensive background in the NFL. He recently worked at the University of North Carolina for two seasons, focusing on the defensive line. Before that, he was the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts. He also coached outside linebackers for the Baltimore Ravens from 2010 to 2015 and won a Super Bowl with the team in 2013. At 58 years old, Monachino has spent time coaching at various colleges, including James Madison and Arizona State early in his career. He also had a brief stint as the defensive coordinator at Kansas State before joining the Chicago Bears. His hiring comes after Maryland's poor season, where the team finished with a 4-8 record. Monachino replaces Brian Williams, who left for a similar position at Jacksonville State. Additionally, Maryland coach Mike Locksley has hired Pep Hamilton as the new offense coordinator. Last season, the Terrapins struggled defensively, ranking 105th in points allowed and 80th in yards allowed nationwide.
