Massachusetts AG challenges Trump administration on deportations
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell has a bold message for the Trump Administration. In response to threats of mass deportations targeting Boston, she said, "Bring it on." Campbell spoke about the ongoing challenges that immigrant communities in her state face due to the Trump administration's actions. During a recent interview, Campbell mentioned her role in defending residents against what she sees as unlawful behavior from the administration. She is currently involved in over six lawsuits against Trump and his team. Campbell emphasized that there is a serious disregard for the legal system, which should worry everyone, including those who support the President. She acknowledged that while the President was elected lawfully, his policies aren’t benefiting families in Massachusetts. For example, she criticized cuts to funding for medical research, asking how this support helps with issues like pediatric cancer. Campbell also expressed concern that Trump’s plans could cost Massachusetts up to $20 billion each year. She described the current situation in Washington as a "constitutional crisis" that is not straightforward. Campbell pointed to Trump’s attempts to change the Fourteenth Amendment regarding birthright citizenship as a dangerous precedent. She warned that if the President can alter the Constitution with ease, other rights could be at risk too. Campbell believes it is up to her and other attorneys general to challenge these policies. She highlighted the importance of their work in protecting jobs, infrastructure, and education in the state. As the first Black woman to hold the position of Attorney General in Massachusetts, she feels a strong responsibility to fight for residents’ rights and welfare. In concluding her remarks, Campbell reflected on the sacrifices made by those who fought against oppression before her. She urged for immediate action, saying, "If not now, then when?" and called for courage to protect the people of Massachusetts.
