Massachusetts college cancels study abroad program fearing travel issues
Bunker Hill Community College in Massachusetts has canceled its study abroad program due to concerns over immigration policy. The college's President, Pam Eddinger, expressed worries that some students, who are not U.S. citizens, might face challenges returning to the country after traveling. She stated that even if the trip goes well for most, just one student being unable to return would be a serious issue. The concerns arise amid recent federal immigration policies, particularly a proposed travel ban affecting people from 41 countries. This ban could restrict entry for individuals from a list of 11 specific nations. While the study abroad program is currently paused, the college plans to reserve spots for those interested in the next year's program. Students were informed of the cancellation via email last Friday. The study abroad trips typically last one to two weeks, involving up to 60 students exploring various countries, including Kenya, Ghana, Japan, Costa Rica, and Panama. In Fall 2024, the college had 724 international students from 94 different countries.
