Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has completed successful tests for using drones to deliver medical supplies. These tests were conducted by the Aeronautics Division and were announced on Monday. The tests took place from August to October 2024, involving three companies. The drones transported packages weighing up to 10 pounds for medical deliveries. MassDOT emphasized the importance of drones for various operational needs, including inspections and emergency response. Monica Tibbits-Nutt, MassDOT Secretary and CEO, stated that these tests showcase the potential of drones in healthcare delivery. The department is also looking into other future uses for drones. Currently, agencies such as the MBTA and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency use drones for different tasks. During the tests, drones successfully delivered packages over distances of at least one mile. Major companies like Amazon and FedEx have already started using drones for deliveries. Amazon, for example, delivers packages weighing up to five pounds in select areas in Texas and Arizona. Denise Garcia, Acting Administrator of MassDOT Aeronautics, highlighted the goal of ensuring timely and effective delivery of medical supplies. This announcement follows recent drone sightings and arrests in Massachusetts, which have led to proposals for regulating drones in the state.
