Massachusetts man detained by ICE despite legal status
A man from Massachusetts claims his brother was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) even though he has legal immigration documents. Derick Morales says his brother, Ivan, was among several men taken by ICE in Chelsea on Tuesday morning. Federal agents were seen at different locations, including City Hall, asking questions and detaining individuals. Derick stated that Ivan has no criminal record and has had a work permit that allows him to work legally in the United States for years. During the arrest, Ivan's work permit was taken, while all his other belongings were returned to their mother. The Morales family is now worried that Ivan may be deported back to El Salvador. Derick expressed feelings of anger and sadness about the situation, saying their home life has become chaotic. The raid has created fear in the Chelsea community. Local advocate Norieliz DeJesus noted that many families are questioning their safety. She remarked that the federal actions threaten the trust that had been built over the years. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey commented on the incident, expressing her concern. She said, “I thought the job was to target bad guys, but when they come after working families, that is really concerning.” Derick mentioned that Ivan is currently being held in Plymouth, and the family is seeking legal assistance.
