Master shoplifter caught due to distinctive brown bag
A notorious shoplifter known as a "master of disguise" has been captured after a spree that cost Boots stores £28,000. Craig Sawyer, 51, was arrested following a series of thefts across the UK. He attempted to avoid detection by changing his hair color and wearing glasses. However, police noted he always carried a distinctive brown shoulder bag, which helped them identify him. Sawyer has been banned from all Boots stores after committing 21 theft offenses in areas including Shropshire and Devon. Recently, he received a 14-week jail sentence for five offenses in Devon. Earlier this year, he was sentenced to 42 weeks for 16 thefts, with most occurring at Boots. Despite his efforts to disguise himself, Sawyer's repeated mistakes led to his capture. Police referred to him as "Satchel Man" due to his choice of bag. In addition to being banned from Boots, he faces a five-year criminal behavior order that restricts him from entering Worcestershire. His latest sentence came while he appeared via video link from prison. Reports show that shoplifting in England and Wales has reached record highs, indicating a growing problem for retailers. Major stores have been increasingly concerned about theft. The government has announced new measures to address such crimes, including a new Crime and Policing Bill that empowers police to take action against low-level shoplifting. Boots has been proactive in tackling theft, investing in measures to protect their staff and customers. They praised the outcome of Sawyer's case, highlighting their commitment to creating a safe shopping environment.
