Maxim Rides addresses scam allegations in Cebu City

Maxim Rides and Food Delivery, a ride-hailing app, has responded to recent claims of scams using its platform. The company stated it is taking steps to improve security and prevent future issues. In an email on March 17, Daria Sato, Maxim's public relations specialist, said they have already blocked accounts involved in fraudulent activities. New security features have been added to protect customer information. One feature hides users' phone numbers, which will only be visible to verified drivers after an order is accepted. The response comes after reports on social media highlighted how scammers misuse Maxim's booking system. Some city councilors have also expressed concerns and urged Maxim to investigate and strengthen security measures. Victims reported that fraudsters, pretending to be delivery riders, accessed their contact details. They would then ask for advance payments through digital wallets, only to cancel the order and disappear with the money. To help users avoid scams, Maxim recommended several safety tips. They advised keeping all communication within the app and avoiding external contact if an order is canceled. Customers should only make payments through official Maxim channels and be cautious with unknown accounts. If possible, they should choose cash payments and verify orders before paying. Maxim also encouraged users to report suspicious activities to their support team right away. The scam issue gained attention after a viral post on February 26 by a user named Patriz Herrera. Due to the rising concerns, the council has called on the Department of Trade and Industry and the National Privacy Commission to review Maxim’s data security practices.
