Mayfield Heights woman loses $1,000 in musician scam

cleveland.com

A woman from Mayfield Heights reported being scammed after thinking she could meet a famous jazz musician. The scam started in May 2024 and ended up costing her around $1,000. She shared that she began chatting with the musician on Instagram. He invited her to join his fan club, which required her to pay various fees for her membership. In return, she was promised a chance to meet him. The woman also showed police a pile of checks mailed to her. These checks contained her personal information and instructions to make a check out to herself to receive money. Police contacted the fraud department of the bank that issued the checks. They confirmed that many scams linked to that account usually start with an online romance. The police are currently investigating this case.
