MCG to audit 87 unsafe buildings in Gurugram
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is set to start a structural audit of 87 buildings identified as unsafe. This decision comes after discrepancies were found in a previous survey conducted in 2021-22. A private agency will be hired to conduct the new audit. The Haryana Human Rights Commission ordered the demolition of these buildings last week, but MCG officials now believe the earlier survey results are unreliable. In the past survey, 183 buildings were labeled unsafe, with five already demolished and 60 repaired. MCG inspections have confirmed that 87 of the remaining buildings are unsafe. There are still 31 buildings that have not yet been inspected. MCG Chief Engineer Manoj Yadav stated that immediate action is required. The compliance report for the new audit must be submitted by May 20. The new agency will evaluate factors like construction quality and foundation integrity. Yadav explained that the findings will determine whether buildings need demolition or repairs. Pending inspections could also change the final list of buildings needing action. Under the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act, 1994, the municipal commissioner can order demolition or repairs for buildings deemed dangerous. If owners do not comply with the orders, MCG can carry out the necessary work and charge the costs to the owners.
