MD-11 struggled in passenger market, succeeded in cargo
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 struggled in the passenger airline market, selling only 200 units compared to competitors like the Airbus A340 and Boeing 777. Most airlines quickly retired the aircraft due to poor performance and high fuel consumption. Despite its failure with passenger carriers, the MD-11 found success as a cargo plane. Cargo airlines appreciated its capacity and lower costs, leading to many passenger models being converted for freight use. The last MD-11 freighter was produced in 2001, and while it was once a strong choice for cargo, these aging planes are now being phased out as airlines seek newer models.
