Medina County opens its first emergency housing shelter

cleveland.com

Medina County has opened its first emergency housing shelter, called Next Step Up. This development followed years of planning. The shelter is located at the former administrative offices of the Medina Metropolitan Housing Authority (MMHA) on Walter Road. The shelter provides 27 beds for men, women, and children needing emergency housing. Currently, around 20 people are using the facility, which includes two minor children. Staff members are adapting to the needs of the shelter and its occupants. The shelter is also pet-friendly and offers access to support services from local agencies. There has been a high demand for shelter services in the area. The MMHA reported receiving about 58 calls each month from individuals facing housing crises. This led to a collaboration between elected officials, social service agencies, and local businesses to create the shelter. The 2023 Class of Leadership Medina County helped raise awareness by developing a marketing plan. Next Step Up is looking for financial support and plans to publish a wish list of needed items. Those who want more information can contact the shelter by email to receive updates.
