Mercedes' W16 car shows improved stability in Australia
Mercedes' team principal, Toto Wolff, has praised the new W16 Formula One car for its improved stability. This comes after the team achieved strong results in the Australian Grand Prix, with drivers George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli finishing in P3 and P4. Wolff noted that the W16 is more reliable than previous cars from the Lewis Hamilton era, especially during the challenging ground effect period that began in 2022. He expressed confidence in the car's performance and highlighted the positives from the race weekend, especially as key rivals like Red Bull and Ferrari faced difficulties. Hamilton had struggled with performance issues in earlier models, managing to secure only two wins last season. He has since moved to Ferrari in pursuit of his eighth championship. Despite this, Wolff said the W16 has shown steady performance and was less affected by changing conditions during the race. Reflecting on the Australian race, Wolff remarked on the team's strategy that helped secure their first podium of the season. Russell executed a strong race while Antonelli impressed as the only rookie to finish in the top ten, demonstrating skill and maturity. Looking ahead, Wolff expressed excitement for the upcoming race in Shanghai, which will also feature the season's first sprint race. He emphasized the significance of China's market to Formula One and remembered the passionate fan turnout last year, marking a notable event after a five-year absence. Currently, Mercedes holds second place in the 2025 Team Standings, with 27 points, tied with championship leader McLaren.
