Merseyside libraries face closure due to funding cuts
Wirral Council has revealed that several libraries are at risk of closure due to a £25 million budget cut. A government review indicated that the council will receive £20 million for the upcoming financial year but still faces a £7.6 million budget gap. Previously, the council planned to keep six libraries open, but recent updates suggest that fewer may close. Libraries still at risk include Beechwood, Eastham, Greasby, Rock Ferry, and Upton, with future plans for partnership libraries under review. The council aims to establish a library committee with representatives from all political parties to engage the public. Upcoming meetings will discuss policies on public engagement and transferring library assets to community management.
