Meta tests AI-generated comments feature on Instagram

Meta is testing a new feature for Instagram that uses AI to suggest comments. This initiative is part of Meta's ongoing efforts to incorporate AI into their apps. Previously, the company has tried various AI elements, including characters with their own personalities, but some of those experiments did not succeed. Users participating in the test will see a “Write with Meta AI” option. This feature allows them to get suggestions for comments on pictures. A user named Jonah Manzano shared a video showing how it works. When users tap a pencil icon beneath a post, the AI analyzes the photo and provides three comment options. For instance, if the photo shows someone smiling in their living room, the AI might suggest comments like “Cute living room setup” or “Love the cozy atmosphere.” If users don’t like the suggestions, they can refresh for more ideas. A Meta spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the company is testing various uses of AI across its apps. However, Meta did not specify when this feature might be available to more users. Many Instagram users might not welcome AI-generated comments, as they prefer genuine interactions over automated responses. The introduction of AI comments could clash with users who seek more authenticity on the platform. In the past, Meta has also tested AI-generated comment summaries on Facebook, showing a trend of exploring AI capabilities across social media.
