MetaAI launch in Europe still pending regulatory approval

Meta is preparing to launch its AI tool, MetaAI, across Europe. The rollout comes after the company faced scrutiny over its use of personal data to train its AI models. The European Commission is waiting for a risk assessment from Meta. This assessment will help determine if MetaAI complies with EU online platform rules. A spokesperson from the Commission emphasized the importance of safety and transparency as outlined in the Digital Services Act (DSA). Under the DSA, companies must submit risk assessments each year and before launching new features. Once Meta provides its assessment, the Commission will review all relevant documents to ensure compliance. Meta's plan to expand in Europe faced delays last summer due to regulatory concerns. The Irish Data Protection Commission told the company to pause its rollout as it intended to use data from adult Facebook and Instagram users for training. Despite the hurdles, Meta expressed relief to finally move forward. "It's taken longer than we would have liked, but we're glad we’re finally here," the company stated in a blog post. Meta's leadership has been vocal about their concerns regarding Europe’s regulatory actions, especially in light of the new U.S. administration's stance.
