Mets delay Opening Day roster announcement seeking trade
The New York Mets have not yet announced their Opening Day roster as they explore the possibility of a trade. They are looking for a right-handed bat to strengthen their lineup. Insider Joel Sherman reported that if the Mets succeed in making a trade, Luisangel Acuña will likely be sent down to Triple-A. The team seems ready to start the season with Brett Baty as their second baseman against most right-handed pitchers. If the Mets do not acquire a new infielder soon, Acuña is expected to be part of the Opening Day roster. The team is specifically interested in players who can come off the bench. One target mentioned is Cincinnati Reds infielder Santiago Espinal. Espinal has a salary of $2.4 million for 2025 and one more year of control. He had a batting average of .246 last season, hitting 9 home runs and driving in 45 runs. In contrast, Acuña has a .235 average this spring and has shown some speed with three stolen bases. The Mets will kick off their 2025 MLB season on the road against the Houston Astros on March 27.
