Mets finalize rotation amid competition for remaining spots
The competition for the final two spots in the New York Mets' starting rotation is heating up. Paul Blackburn and Griffin Canning both started games on Monday, showcasing their skills as they aim for a spot. This comes after Tylor Megill had a mixed outing with five innings pitched. With Sean Manaea out for most of April due to an injury and Frankie Montas sidelined, the Mets are in need of pitchers. The current rotation includes Clay Holmes, Kodai Senga, and David Peterson. Canning performed well recently, striking out nine batters and allowing only one run in his start against the Rays. Blackburn, on the other hand, gave up two runs but struck out six in a win against the Marlins. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza mentioned that the team is considering moving one of the competing starters to the bullpen. However, he did not specify which player might take on that role. Mendoza emphasized that they still have time to decide, with seven games left in spring training. Blackburn expressed his willingness to accept whatever role the team assigns him. He noted that the coaches had already discussed the possibility of a bullpen role earlier this spring. Canning, who had a tough season with the Angels last year, feels optimistic about his recent performance and believes he is improving under the Mets' guidance. The team is also looking at each pitcher's ability to recover after games, which will factor into their decision-making process. For now, Mendoza confirmed that all players will continue preparing as starters, focusing on building up their pitch counts. There is also potential for the Mets to switch to a six-man rotation by April.
