Mets may struggle to make playoffs this season
The New York Mets are facing high expectations for the 2025 season after a successful run to the National League Championship Series. This offseason, they made big moves, including signing star player Juan Soto to a 15-year, $765 million contract. They also added pitchers Frankie Montas, Griffin Canning, and Clay Holmes, and brought back fan-favorite players Sean Manaea and Pete Alonso. However, spring training has not started well for the Mets. Manaea and Montas are already injured, with Montas expected to be out for a while. Young catcher Francisco Alvarez will miss at least a month due to a fractured hand. Additionally, veterans Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil are also dealing with injuries. Closer Edwin Diaz has been healthy but is showing a worrying decrease in his pitch velocity. With the strong competition in the National League East, the Mets may struggle this season. MLB.com writer Anthony Castrovince highlighted the team's injuries and concerns about their pitching staff compared to the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves. He pointed out that the Mets had a lucky record of 28-16 in one-run games last year, suggesting they might not have the same success this season. If the injuries and pitching issues continue, the Mets might miss the playoffs despite their impressive lineup.
