Mexico considers tariffs in response to Trump's proposed trade measures
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Mexico may impose its own tariffs in response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's proposed 25% tariffs on Mexican goods. She emphasized the need for dialogue and highlighted that drug issues are primarily a U.S. problem. Sheinbaum's approach contrasts with former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's cooperative stance during Trump's first term. Sheinbaum, who took office in October, insists on negotiating as equals and warns that tariffs could harm businesses on both sides of the border. Trump announced his tariff plans on social media, linking them to issues of illegal migration and drug trafficking. He stated that the tariffs would remain until Mexico and Canada address these concerns.
