Mexico tests app to help migrants alert contacts before US detention
Mexico is testing a new cellphone app that allows migrants to alert relatives and consulates if they are about to be detained by U.S. immigration. This initiative responds to President-elect Donald Trump's plans for mass deportations starting January 20. The app functions like a panic button, sending notifications to selected contacts and the nearest Mexican consulate. Mexico's foreign affairs secretary, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, reported that initial tests show the app is effective. In addition to the app, Mexico has increased consular staff and legal aid for migrants facing deportation. A 24-hour call center has also been established to assist migrants with their inquiries.
