Mexico's president calls talks with Trump excellent amid tariff concerns
Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum met with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to discuss migration and drug trafficking. Sheinbaum described the talks as "excellent," addressing concerns over Trump's proposed tariffs on Mexican imports. Trump plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, citing drug issues and illegal immigration. Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard warned that this could lead to 400,000 job losses in the U.S. and higher costs for consumers. Sheinbaum criticized the tariff threats as "unacceptable," emphasizing that Mexico's drug cartels primarily serve U.S. drug users. Both Mexico and China have opposed Trump's trade war rhetoric as his second term approaches.
