MGU becomes Kerala's first Category 1 university

Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) in Kottayam has achieved a significant milestone by being awarded Category 1 Grade by the University Grants Commission (UGC). This makes MGU the first university in its state to receive this honor. The UGC announced this recognition following a meeting on March 13. The decision was based on MGU's application and its excellent performance in a recent evaluation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), where the university earned an A++ grade with a GPA of 3.61. Only 21 state universities across India have been given Category 1 status. This recognition allows MGU more autonomy. The university can now implement various projects and establish new institutions without needing prior approval from the UGC. With this new status, MGU can design and offer innovative courses and programs. It can also create off-campus centers, academic departments, constituent colleges, and science parks. Additionally, MGU will be able to provide distance education programs independently.
