Michael van Gerwen defeats Niko Springer in Gottingen
Michael van Gerwen made a strong comeback to defeat Niko Springer in the second round of the European Trophy in Gottingen. Van Gerwen was down 3-0 and later 5-3 but rallied to win the match 6-5. He will advance to face Gian van Veen, who beat Josh Rock 6-4. Van Gerwen expressed that he fought hard against Springer and believes he has more to give. Luke Humphries also secured a victory, defeating Boris Krcmar 6-4. Krcmar had come back from 3-0 to tie the game before Humphries pulled ahead again. The world number one stated that he needed to play well and felt motivated to prove himself in this tournament. He will take on Michael Smith next, who won his match against Ricardo Pietreczko 6-2. In other matches, Martin Schindler moved past Jonny Clayton with a 6-1 win. Jermaine Wattimena had an impressive performance, achieving an average of 111.07 while defeating Chris Dobey 6-4. Other players advancing included Rob Cross, Dave Chisnall, Gerwyn Price, Nathan Aspinall, and Gary Anderson. Unfortunately, several seeded players, including Clayton, Dobey, and Peter Wright, were eliminated from the tournament. Wright lost 6-4 to Mike De Decker.
