Michele Kang wants to keep Trinity Rodman in NWSL
Michele Kang, the owner of the Washington Spirit, wants to keep star player Trinity Rodman in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Kang believes it is crucial for both the team and the league that Rodman stays in the U.S. for now. Ahead of the Spirit's home opener against Kansas City Current, Kang spoke to reporters about Rodman's interest in playing in Europe. Rodman, a U.S. Olympic gold medalist, mentioned she has thought about playing overseas during her career. She joined the Spirit in 2021 as the second overall pick in the NWSL Draft and signed a $1.1 million contract extension last year. Rodman's contract is set to expire at the end of this season, and Kang emphasized her commitment to keeping Rodman in Washington. She stated, “We’re going to do everything in our power to hopefully keep her here.” The discussion about Rodman's future has gained attention as other American players, like Naomi Girma and Jenna Nighswonger, have recently signed with European clubs. Kang did not dismiss the idea of a future loan for Rodman but expressed her desire for her to remain in the NWSL. Kang is known for her global perspective on soccer. She also owns teams in Europe, including the London City Lionesses and Lyon in France. Kang believes experiences in different leagues can benefit players from both Europe and America. Rodman was a standout player last season, scoring eight goals alongside her teammate Ouleymata Sarr. She is also a key marketing figure for the NWSL, featuring in a campaign in Times Square before the season began.
