Michigan's defense shows potential despite NFL departures
Michigan's football team is gearing up for spring practices in Ann Arbor. The team's defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, expressed confidence in the depth of the defense, despite losing several talented players to the NFL. Mason Graham, a defensive tackle, and other top players like Kenneth Grant and Josaiah Stewart have left. Martindale is unsure if any current players will be first-round draft picks this year, but he believes many of them have potential for the next day's draft. The team has also strengthened its defensive line with experienced transfers Damon Payne from Alabama and Tre Williams from Clemson. For the edge rushers, Derrick Moore and TJ Guy are returning. Martindale expects new additions like Cameron Brandt and Breeon Ishmail to contribute, along with more responsibility for linebacker Jaishawn Barham in pass-rushing roles. The team will keep both of its starting middle linebackers, Barham and Ernest Hausmann. Martindale mentioned that recent transfer Troy Bowles from Georgia might also make an impact. In the secondary, Will Johnson and Makari Paige have gone to the NFL, but Martindale feels good about the depth and competition for spots. Players like Jyaire Hill and Zeke Berry will be in the mix, along with several transfers and returning players looking to secure their roles. The Michigan defense ended 2024 strong, allowing only two touchdowns in the final 14 quarters of play. This success has kept players motivated, as Martindale noted that there were no transfer requests during the offseason. The team is eager and ready for the upcoming season.
