"Mickey 17" fails at box office, releases early on streaming
The biggest box office disappointment of 2025 is the sci-fi thriller *Mickey 17*, directed by Bong Joon Ho. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, the film is projected to lose over $100 million. This financial failure has led to an early release on streaming platforms, just 18 days after its theatrical debut. *Mickey 17* will be available for digital rental on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV starting March 25. This comes as a surprise since the movie only premiered in theaters on March 7. Warner Bros Discovery, the studio behind the film, is moving to streaming to limit losses as box office earnings have been disappointing. The film had a production budget of $118 million, with an additional $80 million spent on marketing. To break even, it needed to earn over $300 million. However, after nine days, it has only made about $90.5 million globally, putting it far from that target. Critics have lauded *Mickey 17*, giving it a 78% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 72 on Metacritic. It features a star-studded cast, including Robert Pattinson and Toni Collette. Despite the accolades, the film’s box office numbers indicate it will be the most unprofitable release of the year.
