Microsoft ends OneNote for Windows 10 support on October 2025
Microsoft will end support for OneNote for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Organizations are advised to switch to OneNote on Windows 365 to access new features and security updates. OneNote for Windows 10 originally began as OneNote MX, a simple app designed for Windows 8. It featured a unique radial menu for easy navigation. This version quickly became the default OneNote app, as Microsoft shifted its focus to a more integrated experience across devices. Over time, OneNote for Windows 10 was updated to match other Office apps, but it coexisted with other versions of OneNote. In 2018, Microsoft planned to stop updates for the desktop version, but later changed its mind and decided to enhance both apps. However, by 2023, OneNote for Windows 10 was removed from Windows 11 installations, signaling a shift in Microsoft's strategy. The main reason for discontinuing support is the lack of important security features needed to protect sensitive information. Additionally, Microsoft plans to focus on OneNote (M365), which includes AI-powered features aimed at improving productivity. Starting in June 2025, OneNote for Windows 10 will see slower performance and limited updates. Users will be encouraged to switch to the newer version, impacting their workflows if they remain with the old app.
