Middlesbrough Central Library might reopen in May 2025
Middlesbrough Central Library is expected to reopen earlier than planned. The library closed in December 2023 for renovations and was originally scheduled to reopen in the summer. Now, officials say it could open as soon as May. The renovations include a new events space, an IT suite, and upgrades to make the library more welcoming for families and children. Geoff Field, the council's director of environment and community services, expressed excitement about the development. He said the library should be ready by early May, pending some final work on the lift. There are concerns that the reopening could affect smaller local libraries. These libraries have been hosting some of the central library's resources during its closure. Labour councillor Jill Ewan mentioned her worries about the future of the Newport Hub library, which has recently become popular. Mayor Chris Cooke acknowledged these concerns and mentioned that even after the central library reopens, they may continue to support smaller libraries that have been beneficial during the closure.
