Twins John and Zach Mikrut are back on the volleyball court at Brother Rice High School after their success in basketball. They recently won the Class 3A second-place trophy but are eager to achieve more in volleyball. John, a right-side hitter, and Zach, an outside hitter, have set their sights on winning a trophy this spring. They are excited because the entire team is returning with strong talent. “We’re hungry,” John said, recalling how long it has been since the volleyball team earned a trophy. In volleyball, Brother Rice has two trophies: third place in 2004 and fourth place in 2017. The Mikruts experienced disappointment in 2021 when they lost in the state quarterfinals. John believes their basketball loss can motivate them this season. “We have high hopes for volleyball, too,” he stated. Zach is also driven to make a strong comeback after recovering from a severe knee injury. He found the recovery challenging but learned patience and determination. “Just to be back means the world to me,” Zach said, reflecting on his journey back to the court. The Mikruts' return has great significance to their coach, Brandon McGinnis. He praised their impact on the team, stating they elevate everyone's performance and bring out the best in their teammates. The boys' volleyball season begins across the state on Monday. Last spring, Brother Rice finished with a 25-14 record and is optimistic for the upcoming season with the twins and other key players returning to the team.
