Millions must submit energy readings by March's end
Millions of households in the UK have just over a week to submit their energy meter readings. This is important as a new energy price cap will take effect on April 1. The average energy bill will rise by £111, bringing the total to £1,849 a year for homes using gas and electricity with Direct Debit payments. The new cap, set by the regulator Ofgem, is a 6.4% increase from the previous rate. About 22 million households are on variable tariffs, meaning their bills change with the price cap. Those on fixed tariffs will not be affected by the increase. Households on standard variable tariffs need to submit their meter readings before the price cap rises. If they miss the deadline, they could receive an estimated bill based on expected usage, not actual usage. The deadline for submitting meter readings varies by supplier. Energy companies are also offering various forms of assistance for those struggling with bills. Options include repayment plans, grants, and extra support for vulnerable customers. For example, British Gas and Scottish Gas provide grants of up to £2,000 for customers in need. Households also miss out on vital help by not signing up for the Priority Services Register. This service assists vulnerable customers with benefits like advance notices of blackouts and free safety checks. To submit a meter reading, customers can do so via phone, website, or app. Those with smart meters do not need to submit readings manually, but should check that their smart meter is functioning properly.
