Milwaukee mother urges citywide action against gun violence
Milwaukee is experiencing a troubling rise in gun violence, with a series of recent shootings leaving families mourning loved ones. Community advocate Trinika Walker, who leads the group Stop the Violence 53206, is calling for everyone to take action. Walker said she was deeply affected as she drove past a crime scene where a shooting injured one person. She recalled the pain of losing her son and grandson to gun violence. The violence in Milwaukee has impacted many families, with the police reporting at least 22 people shot in just one week, including an 8-year-old victim. Despite these incidents, data from the Milwaukee Police indicate a decrease in both homicides and non-fatal shootings by more than 30% compared to last year. However, for those directly affected, the statistics mean little. The shooting death of Brenisha Butcher, a loving mother of four, shocked the community and has led to the permanent closure of the bar where she was shot. Organizations like Safe and Sound are stepping in to help. They recently organized a community cleanup to improve local neighborhoods. Walker is also working tirelessly, hosting Safe Zone Summer Camps to provide safe activities for children. She emphasizes that responsibility for change lies with everyone in the community, not just one group. As summer approaches, Walker is planning more youth camps and is seeking funding to ensure their success. Her message is clear: everyone has a role to play in reducing gun violence.
