Mining sector crucial for electric vehicles and technology
Mangaluru: The mining sector is changing rapidly and is now essential for industries like electric vehicles and technology. Ujjwal Tah, director general of the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), emphasized the importance of minerals for progress and the need for sustainable practices. He spoke at a workshop called ‘Health and Safety in Mines (HSM-2025)’ at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal. Tah highlighted the potential of space mining as the next big opportunity. He encouraged young people to engage in this field and in sourcing critical minerals. To achieve India’s vision of a developed nation, he called for the adoption of modern mining technologies. He noted significant opportunities for innovation, especially for young entrepreneurs developing local equipment. He also stressed that health and safety for workers should be a top priority. PM Prasad, chairman-cum-managing director of Coal India Limited, discussed the evolution of mine safety in India. He mentioned that safety measures have improved significantly from basic regulations in the early 20th century to a more sophisticated system today. However, he pointed out that ongoing challenges require continuous improvements in safety standards. Prasad stated that integrating new technologies, providing comprehensive training, and managing safety risks are crucial to protecting workers. Tools like digital applications, safer mining techniques, and better equipment are vital for employee well-being. He added that creating a culture that prioritizes safety is necessary for lasting improvements in the mining industry. The workshop included expert talks aimed at addressing the unique health and safety challenges in mining. Participants explored advanced risk assessment methods, emerging technologies, and best practices to enhance safety and efficiency in operations.
