Minneapolis mayor promises protection for illegal immigrants
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has reaffirmed his commitment to making the city a "safe haven" for illegal immigrants. In a recent town hall meeting, Frey spoke alongside other Democratic leaders, including Rep. Ilhan Omar. He emphasized that Minneapolis is a welcoming place for all residents, regardless of their immigration status. Frey has a history of opposing President Trump's immigration policies. He stated that Minneapolis police would not ask about people's immigration status and would not arrest anyone simply for being in the country illegally. He expressed his support for undocumented immigrants, saying, “We love you; we care about you." However, Frey's stance has faced criticism. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a Republican, accused Frey of prioritizing illegal immigrants over the safety of Minneapolis residents. He pointed out past incidents involving illegal immigrants, including a known terrorist arrest and child predators, to argue that Frey's policies put citizens at risk. Emmer and other Minnesota Republicans have urged Frey to focus on the safety of his constituents rather than protecting individuals who break immigration laws. They argue that the mayor's decisions could have serious consequences for public safety.
