Minnesota's Walk-In Access program enrollment is open
Enrollment is now open for Minnesota's 2025 Walk-In Access program. This program pays landowners to allow the public to access their private lands for outdoor activities. Since 2011, the program has focused on parcels of at least 40 acres that have natural habitats, often included in conservation programs. Landowners can earn $18 per acre for enrolling their land. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) works with local soil and water conservation districts to help landowners join the program. A list of participating counties and their contact information can be found on the Minnesota DNR's website. To access these lands, outdoor enthusiasts need a $3 Walk-In Access validation. Enrolled parcels are marked with clear signs. The validation allows users to participate in various activities, such as hunting, bird watching, and photography. Amber Knutson, the program coordinator, says the initiative benefits both landowners and outdoor enthusiasts. About 30,000 acres are available for activities, giving outdoor lovers a place to enjoy nature. Landowners also receive financial incentives and liability protection. Access to the Walk-In Access parcels is available from September 1 to May 31, during specific hours. All hunting laws apply, and non-hunters are advised to wear bright colors during hunting seasons for safety. The program is mainly funded by a federal grant and other sources, including fees from nonresident hunting licenses and individual donations. Interested landowners can sign up at their local conservation district office or contact Amber Knutson for more information.
