Minors caused 11,890 road accidents in India
The Indian government recently reported serious concerns about minors driving vehicles. Data shows that minors were responsible for an average of 16 accidents every day in 2023 and 2024, totaling 11,890 incidents. Tamil Nadu had the highest number of accidents, with 2,063 incidents, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 1,138 and Maharashtra with 1,067. The statistics were shared in Parliament by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. In response to these accidents, nearly 1,500 traffic rule violations by minors were recorded in the last two years. Bihar reported the most violations, with 1,316 challans and fines totaling around Rs 44.27 lakh. Chhattisgarh followed with 71 challans and Rs 1.30 lakh in fines. Jammu and Kashmir issued 65 challans, while Delhi and Uttarakhand each had only 22. The ministry mentioned recent efforts to improve road safety, including the development of an Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) system, which is now in place across all states and union territories. The ministry also highlighted the legal framework surrounding minors driving. According to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, guardians or vehicle owners can face consequences if a minor commits a traffic offense. The law aims to ensure accountability and improve road safety.
