Mizoram woman arrested for selling children due to poverty
A 25-year-old woman from Mizoram was arrested for trying to sell her two young children. This happened on Wednesday in Champhai, according to police reports. The woman, named Lalsangpuii, was said to be struggling with poverty and debt. She allegedly used a mobile app to find someone who might buy her children, who are six years old and one-and-a-half years old. Lalsangpuii reportedly owes over ₹ 50,000 to private lenders and has other outstanding debts with a private bank. The authorities acted after the chairman of the Mizoram Child Welfare Committee filed a report accusing her of attempted human trafficking. During questioning, Lalsangpuii said she was in a desperate situation due to her financial troubles and didn’t realize she was breaking the law. Following her arrest, her older daughter was taken into protective custody by the Child Welfare Committee, while the younger child is now with their father. Officials stated that help and support will be provided for the children.
