In Mohali, MLA Kulwant Singh has instructed local authorities to improve traffic signage in the area. This includes adding zebra crossings, stop markings, and speed limit signs. The call for action follows complaints about inadequate traffic infrastructure linked to the new City Surveillance and Traffic Management System. During a meeting with Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal, local police officials, and city commissioners, Singh emphasized the importance of using CCTV surveillance to manage traffic effectively. He stressed that it should not just serve as a way to generate revenue. The Deputy Commissioner has given the Mohali Municipal Corporation one week to address these issues. The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has been given two weeks to comply. Mittal also called for speed limit signs similar to those in Chandigarh, noting that the Punjab government has set a speed limit of 50 km per hour in municipal areas. Additionally, SSP Deepak Pareek suggested connecting traffic signals at key intersections to a central control system. He proposed a pilot project to limit heavy vehicle traffic on certain roads during busy hours. The Deputy Commissioner agreed to consider this proposal. The meeting included several senior officials from various departments. On March 6, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched the pilot project for the City Surveillance and Traffic Management System in Mohali. The initiative aims to enhance public safety and reduce traffic violations using advanced AI technology. The first phase involves the installation of 351 high-resolution CCTV cameras at 17 critical junctions in the city.
