Moldova votes in presidential election between pro-EU incumbent and pro-Russian challenger
Moldova held a presidential election on Sunday, featuring pro-EU incumbent Maia Sandu against former prosecutor Alexandr Stoianoglo, labeled a "Russian Trojan horse." Allegations of Russian interference in the election process have emerged, including claims of pro-Kremlin Moldovans being flown in to vote. In the first round, Sandu received 42% of the votes, while Stoianoglo garnered 26%. Analysts noted that pro-Russia parties are rallying behind Stoianoglo, potentially increasing his support. The final results of the second round are expected late Sunday or early Monday. A recent referendum on EU membership also faced challenges, passing with only 50.35% support amid claims of pro-Russian influence. Moldova, with a population of three million, remains vulnerable to external pressures, particularly from Moscow.
