Moldova's Sandu claims election victory amid allegations of Russian interference
Moldova's pro-Western President Maia Sandu claimed victory in the presidential election, receiving 54.3% of the vote against Alexandr Stoianoglo, who was backed by the pro-Russian Socialist Party. The election was marked by allegations of Russian interference, which Moscow denied. Despite her victory, Sandu faced challenges, as she lost the domestic vote with 48.8% compared to Stoianoglo's 51.2%. However, she gained significant support from Moldovan expatriates, who accounted for over 80% of her votes. Sandu's administration has focused on strengthening ties with the European Union, contrasting with Stoianoglo's mixed approach of supporting EU integration while maintaining relations with Russia. The election results reflect ongoing divisions in Moldova regarding its geopolitical direction.
