Monkey fever cases decline in Uttara Kannada district
Karwar: Monkey fever cases in Uttara Kannada district have sharply declined this year. Last year, there were 112 reported cases and nine deaths due to the disease. This year, only one case has been reported so far, showing that monkey fever is now under control. Monkey fever typically rises from February to May in this region. The disease had a strong impact in the Malnad area, especially in Siddapur taluk, where most cases occurred last year. Out of the 112 cases in 2023, 104 were in Siddapur. This year, health officials report that the situation has greatly improved. Dr. Neeraj, the District Health Officer, confirmed that just one case has been detected in the district this year. The health department has implemented strict measures to combat the disease, including raising awareness in villages. Blood tests were conducted on 1,800 individuals, but no confirmed cases were found. Additionally, while 18 monkeys died in the district, these deaths have not been linked to monkey fever. Dr. Neeraj expressed relief, indicating that the district is no longer facing fears of the disease this year. The health department's proactive approach has included regular monitoring and swift responses to any suspected cases. Health workers are visiting homes in vulnerable areas to identify symptoms. They have also strengthened the vaccination program, particularly in high-risk locations. Local health centres have sufficient supplies of vaccines and medicines, and a surveillance system is in place to track cases and monkey deaths.
