Mortal Kombat 2 images excite; Street Fighter faces delays

Karl Urban's portrayal of Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 has fans excited following the release of the first images. The sequel is highly anticipated, especially after the success of the 2021 Mortal Kombat film. However, the news isn’t as good for the Street Fighter remake. Originally scheduled for a March 20, 2026 release, the film has lost its date and is now in limbo. Sony has not provided details on why the project was delayed. Kitao Sakurai was announced as the new director just a month ago, replacing the previous directors Danny and Michael Philippou. Their exit followed praise for their work on the horror film Talk to Me. The lack of a cast announcement for the Street Fighter film leads to speculation about scheduling problems. In contrast, Mortal Kombat 2 remains on track for its release on October 24, 2025. It continues under the direction of Simon McQuoid with screenwriter Jeremy Slater. Besides Urban, the film features a strong cast, including Jessica McNamee and Hiroiyuki Sanada. Meanwhile, Sony has also delayed the release of another project, the shark thriller Shiver, which will now premiere in July 2026 instead of August 2025.
