Mother charged after daughter's suspicious death in Newark
A six-year-old girl named Ne’miya Hall was found dead in her Newark home on March 10. Her mother, Zyhirah Hall, 26, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after police discovered Ne’miya unconscious on the couch. Police reports indicate that Ne’miya may have suffered serious abuse. Her younger brother told investigators that their mother beat Ne’miya, which resulted in her teeth being knocked out. The boy also showed signs of physical abuse, including a black eye and visible injuries on his back. Zyhirah Hall had a history of child abuse complaints. Just a week before Ne’miya's death, she pleaded guilty to multiple counts of child abuse and was awaiting sentencing. Despite her past, she had been allowed to keep her children. This has raised concerns about how the child welfare system handled her case. On the day Ne’miya died, Hall claimed her daughter was sick. She said Ne’miya was vomiting and gave her a graham cracker, but soon after, the girl became unresponsive. Investigators noticed signs of abuse when they found Ne’miya and her brother. Hall admitted to using a belt to hit Ne’miya days prior. The girl’s father expressed his suspicions about the situation, citing numerous bruises on Ne’miya's body. A fundraising page for Ne’miya’s funeral has been set up, with family members reflecting on their feelings of guilt for not protecting her.
