Mount Carmel's TJ McQuillan shines in season opener victory
TJ McQuillan from Mount Carmel had an impressive game, helping his team win against Bremen 7-2 at Ozinga Field. The junior third baseman went 3-for-4 and notably hit a three-run triple. This strong performance was part of a total of six RBIs he earned during the game. McQuillan has learned to read pitchers well, allowing him to anticipate when to hit. He recognized the confidence of Bremen's pitcher, Aiden Gonzales, and prepared himself accordingly. McQuillan said, “I just got ready for it,” after hitting his first triple in the second inning. His efforts, along with contributions from Anthony Chavez, who hit a solo home run, helped Mount Carmel dominate with eight extra-base hits. McQuillan's return to the field is significant as he missed most of his sophomore season due to a shoulder injury. He reflected on the mental challenges he faced during that time. Chavez expressed excitement about McQuillan’s return, stating that having him back makes things easier for the team. Coach Brian Hurry praised McQuillan’s discipline and dedication to the game, noting his hard work in batting practice. McQuillan has a strong baseball background, influenced by his father, who played in college and worked as a scout for MLB teams. He aims to keep up his strong performance this season and help his team succeed, emphasizing the good chemistry they have developed.
