Mr. Miyagi Films secures multiple distribution deals
Mr. Miyagi Films, based in Barcelona, has secured several distribution deals for David Matamoros' new queer romantic comedy, "Who Wants to Marry an Astronaut?" The film was released under the title "¿Quién quiere casarse con un astronauta?" TLA has acquired distribution rights for North America, the U.K., and Ireland. Optimale will handle the film's release in France. Other agreements include Tongariro for Poland and OutTV Media for the Netherlands, along with ProFun for Germany, Italy, Portugal, Israel, and Scandinavia. The film is the first solo project for director Matamoros. It is co-produced by Uruguayan and Argentine companies, and will be released in Spain on July 11. The story centers on David, whose engagement proposal is unexpectedly rejected. He has ten days to find someone else to marry, leading to comedic turns. Matamoros, in an interview, explained that he wanted to create a happy ending focused on the character, beyond his sexual orientation. This approach shifts away from typical LGBTQ+ narratives, aiming instead for a universally relatable story of love and happiness. Co-founder Ángels Hernández noted the challenges of public funding for films and emphasized the importance of collaboration to tell diverse stories. The film resonates with audiences across different backgrounds, and its positive portrayal of love aims to challenge traditional romantic comedy frameworks. Overall, "Who Wants to Marry an Astronaut?" is being well-received and shows promise in the current market for romantic comedies, appealing to various festival programmers and broader audiences.
