Mt. Pleasant to celebrate 100 years of doughboy monument on Veterans Day
Mt. Pleasant will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its doughboy monument on Veterans Day. The statue, originally dedicated in 1924, has been rebuilt five times due to damage from traffic collisions. The first statue was damaged before its dedication, and subsequent versions were destroyed in accidents in 1927, 1968, and 1981. Each time, the community funded a new statue, with costs increasing over the years. Despite discussions about relocating the statue, local officials have decided to keep it in its original spot, as it has become a symbol of the town. The monument has been reinforced to withstand future incidents.
