Mumbai doctor sentenced for sexually abusing minor employee
A doctor in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, has been sentenced to three years in prison for sexually abusing a minor. The 66-year-old doctor, who owns a health products store, was found guilty of molesting a 17-year-old girl who worked for him. The incident took place in a storeroom in 2018. Special Judge Madhuri S Deshpande highlighted the growing issue of sexual offenses against children. She stated that these cases reflect a cruel mindset. Victims, especially young children, are easy targets due to their vulnerability and lack of experience. In addition to his prison term, the doctor was fined Rs 6,000. This amount, if paid, will be given to the victim as compensation. The judge acknowledged that while no amount of money can truly make up for the trauma, it may offer some comfort to the girl. During the trial, the victim and her maternal uncle provided important testimony. The girl started working at the store just eight days before the abuse occurred. In March 2018, she went to retrieve keys from the doctor’s storeroom. He invited her inside, made inappropriate comments, and then molested her. After the incident, she confided in her maternal cousin and later reported the abuse to her uncle. They filed a police complaint together. The judge noted the severe impact of the abuse on the victim, her family, and the community. She emphasized that such incidents create fear and distrust regarding children's safety in their own neighborhoods.
