Mumbai seniors struggle with unsafe walking conditions
Mumbai's elderly citizens face increasing challenges with walkability due to roadworks and heavy traffic. Many seniors, like 82-year-old Mukund Vaidya, have stopped walking outside, impacting their mobility and social interactions. The Bombay High Court has highlighted the need for better pedestrian infrastructure. In response, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has allocated Rs 100-crore this year to improve footpaths, aiming to make them safer for seniors and disabled individuals. As conditions worsen, some seniors now rely on technology for transportation, while others depend on neighbors for assistance. Activists stress the importance of accessible and safe pavements to support an age-friendly city.
