Mumbai's BEST bus network integrates with Google Maps
Mumbai's public transport system will soon improve as the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) network teams up with Google Maps. This integration will allow passengers to plan their journeys using all 402 bus routes operated by BEST. The new feature is expected to launch within a month. Currently, passengers cannot track BEST bus routes in real-time. This update aims to change that, enabling commuters to find optimal routes based on live GPS data. Passengers will be able to enter their starting point and destination into Google Maps, which will suggest the best travel options. These will include combinations of BEST buses, metro, local trains, auto-rickshaws, and taxis. BEST general manager SVR Srinivas noted that they have had discussions with Google. The goal is to make bus routes visible to the public and improve service efficiency. In February 2024, the Maharashtra government partnered with Google to use artificial intelligence for public services. This initiative will help BEST gather useful data to enhance bus operations. BEST aims to adjust its routes by analyzing passenger demand and preferences. Currently, the organization operates routes that may need optimization. By reducing long-distance routes, they hope to increase the overall occupancy rate of buses from 49% to 72%. They plan to focus on shorter, more frequently traveled routes that connect with train and metro stations. Furthermore, BEST is expanding its bus fleet from 2,900 to 3,500 buses by June, emphasizing the need for faster production. The target is to add around 100-150 buses each month, including 2,100 new AC electric buses. This expansion and integration with Google Maps are aimed at making public transport in Mumbai more efficient and user-friendly.
